Communications Systems Lab

 

The Communication Systems Laboratory facilitates experimental study in the specialist areas of telecommunications and datacommunications. Work in the lab offers students a unique insight into the ever-changing multidisciplinary world of communications engineering and fosters a strong collaboration with industry. The laboratory has three major areas of focus: Radio Frequency Transmission, Digital Communications and Data Communications Networks and is fully equipped with a broad range of instruments and systems from industry-leading suppliers such as Agilent, Cisco, Tektronix, Sun and Fluke..

Lab 219 offers undergraduate students, practical experience in the operation and application of state-of- the-art communications equipment, and industry-standard software tools. In addition to a suite of test and measurement equipment located at each of the labs 20 workstations, students gain hands-on use of specialised test and training systems used in the telecommunications industry, such as, network and spectrum analysers, antenna, microwave and telephony trainers, signal generators and analysers.

The Communications Systems Laboratory also provides a full range of computer network equipment (Cisco routers and switches etc.) configured as a stand-alone training network. Using this computer network, our students gain extensive instruction and practical experience in the setup, operation and configuration of the core components found in computer networks and Internets. The training received in this specialist area also positions our students to undertake industry-accredited computer networks courses.
